When you become a believer in a world that is forgetting God, and choosing to live life the way it pleases, you start to see the world in its broken state. It’s like you are given fresh lenses that enable you view the world differently. When you begin to see this brokenness, it’s easy to lose hope in God’s redemption plan sometimes.
You start to take some of the worlds’ burden upon yourself, and it is too much to carry. I can’t count the number of times I thought to myself and prayed that God will just come back already. However, I remember that we aren’t called to carry the world’s burden. Jesus tells us this instead; “Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light” Matthew 11:29. The only burden we are called to bear in Christ is his, not the worlds’.
Don’t be depressed because the world is in a sad state, it is not surprising. The world has always neglected God and done whatever it pleases, but the hope we have is that God’s redemption story isn’t over yet. He calls out to his people amidst the world’s chaos and restores them back to himself. There is beauty that lies within the ashes, and I’m encouraging you today as much as I am encouraging myself.
So what do you do on those days when all you hear is bad news about crime, murder, terrorism and so on?
This is what I do:
Rely on the hope of a future glory and restoration God has promised us: I tend to remind myself of God’s redemption story on days when my hope is wavering. I’ll go to my bible and read a chapter of a prophetic book (I’m reading Ezekiel now). The theme you’ll find consistently in the bible is this; the people of God refuse to keep their covenant with God, and face the consequences which can be exile or oppression, but God so rich in his mercies always delivers them, and promises to restore all they lost. This gives me so much hope, it’s like everything that is happening now has happened before and God is still as merciful as he was then. If the scriptures are not enough, remembering your community in Christ is very important. The lie that you are alone is the lie that enemy will try to sell you, but you are not. There are millions of people like you who know and love God. This fact will provide you with present hope that God is working in the lives of numerous people to bring his plan into fruition.
Be a representation of the beauty that is found in God’s presence: Many people do not believe in God’s hope for a future world because they do not witness beauty in the lives of ‘changed’ believers. When you come to Christ fully, and you’ll know in your heart when this happens, you cannot remain the same. You were living formerly enslaved to sin and fear, but now you are loving bold and free. If there is no change in you, you cannot expect people in the world to know what beauty and hope awaits them when they accept Christ. Whether it’s the way you love on others, or the way you live daily, your life should reflect the person that God is. I’m not saying you should be perfect because no one is, but there is a difference between someone who is allowing God transform them, and someone who just takes God’s grace for granted. Strive to be the change that you want to see in the world.
Pray for the broken world: The best gift you can offer to the world is to pray for it. I wrote about the importance of prayer, and how you can make prayer a habit not long ago. It is important to pray continuously for God’s will to come to pass. Through prayer, you’ll receive the peace, patience and strength you desperately need to keep living and see God’s work come into completion.
As usual, I hope you enjoyed reading this post as much as I enjoyed writing it. Also, are you currently battling with the hopelessness in the world?
