Congratulations Class of 2020!! You are so worthy of being celebrated, you made IT! A special shoutout to my girlfriends (Ekemini, Evi, and Joy), I love you ❤️. I know this is not how you imagined your graduation would be all those years ago. Your family and friends were meant to have flown into your city from across the globe, flowers in hand, camera ready smiles on their faces, excited to celebrate YOU.
Nonetheless, you are graduating during a unique time and you have a STORY for the ages. The next generation will be in awe of your strength as you graduate virtually, during a global pandemic. Those sleepless nights of you worrying if this day would ever come, late nights at the library, the unpaid internships, and stressful group projects have finally paid off. And although you might not know exactly what your next steps are, I want you to take the next week off to relax and bask in your accomplishment.
I understand that this might be hard for you. You graduated but you don’t want to acknowledge the great feat because you automatically get thrown to the bottom of the work force and you might or might not have a job yet. It might seem like you have been thrown off balance as you have never not known what was next. And you are right, it has always been school before this, so this is NEW.
If you have a job lined up, I am super happy for you! Congrats, but if you don’t have a job yet, I am proud of you too! The job that aligns with your purpose is coming. But because we are conditioned to believe that the next step should be here already, you might feel like nothing is worth celebrating yet. Trust me however, you don’t want a year to pass after everything worked out, only to realize that you did not enjoy this moment!
This time last year, as happy as I was to be graduating, the uncertainty about what was next was nerve wracking sometimes. But never could I have imagined just how uncertain life would get in 2020. I’m realizing that since itself is unpredictable, Faith and Hope are what we should all hold on to! And we should definitely celebrate ourselves in the present. If I had known what I know now, I would have been laughing and taking it easy on myself last year.
So I hope this encourages you. I want you to know that you have accomplished a huge mission and you’ve earned this time to relax and unwind, as you plan and prepare for your next step! If you graduated before this year, I want you to encourage the class of 2020 in the comment section. Tell them how proud you are of them and give them one vital lesson you learnt immediately after you graduated.
Mine has to be: DO NOT BE AFRAID! Plan, Pray, Apply for jobs, Talk to friends and mentors. Do anything other than stay in your head until worry and anxiety cripple you. Remember that you are not alone, there are millions of people going through the same situation and it will all work out in the end. Feel free to send me a message here or on my Instagram (oyinlola_ao) if you need someone to talk to. I love you, so please safe and sane
